Submission Statement: This article explains how Russian President Vladimir Putin embraced “traditional values” politics in the 2010s, and how American conservatives who believe that Russia is a traditionalist utopia are being hoodwinked, given the country’s high rates of atheism, divorce, and abortion. These conservatives are analogous to the 20th century progressives who romanticized the Soviet Union despite the fact that the Soviets never genuinely governed according to socialist principles.

3. Pretty sure the wife beating thing is what they want. No consequences for all their bad behavior is the right wing wet dream. The rest of it is just window dressing. They look at Russia and see all these cool rich strong men doing whatever they want and think, man wouldn’t it be so cool if I could do that here too? Anyone who criticizes me, just throw them out a window. The courts? There to protect me and punish my enemies. Basically they think being a psychopath in public with no consequences is cool and the height of human society.

4. The entire conservative base has always been about supporting whoever is saying the things you agree with. This is how you get certain left wing political commentators and crypto fraudsters going to the right, cause they know they’ll get support.

   It doesn’t matter what your background is or what color your shirt is, say what they want to hear and they will defend you. Putin knows this, he’s not stupid.
