    Ukraine and Russia are by no means equal. Talk of equality is nonsense. The little countries that beat major powers are usually far away and don't have a large number of the Superpower's minority. Places like Vietnam or Afghanistan. Israel is both close to Europe and culturally connected. Big reasons why Israel has survived. Ukraine's partners aren't really partners. They are interested in Ukraine only as a proxy and buffer. Russia also sees Ukraine as a buffer. So did France after Versailles when they backed a Polish state instead of a Ukrainian one.

    I urge people read Stephen Kotkin's interview in the New Yorker from a couple days ago. The US is pivoting partly because its allies are so weak, and there are more demands on US power than resources to project it.
