Sexual harassment on public transport: Japan tries to tackle problem of ‘chikan’ • FRANCE 24

Sexual harassment and assault is a big problem on Japan’s huge public transport system. One in 10 women aged 16 to 29 say they have been touched inappropriately on trains, according to the government’s first survey on the issue. But the actual number is likely to be much higher, as many women fear the consequences of reporting incidents to police. About 800 people are arrested for groping – known as “chikan” – in Tokyo every year. But many perpetrators get away with their crimes. In response, the police have launched an app to help them deal with the problem. FRANCE 24’s Airi Futakuchi, Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Justin McCurry report.

  1. Japan is a beautiful place but this type of behaviour must stop! Women must feel and be safe. For the attackers, imagine if another man touched your daughter, girlfriend or wife inappropriately! Women deserve respect.

  2. Police officer are busy in japan? I thought they had the lowest crime rate. They just werent at the place at the right time. If they were there they wont do it.

  3. I'm sorry but I was dead serious while watching the video until the app part came in. The app yelling "YAMETE KUDADAI"… Bruh
Sorry but I just can't… I literally burst out laughing

  4. Ehh I dunno about first dude he showed.
    Could have been incidental.
You get enough people bumping each other, who can say without CLEAR groping.
…And, full disclosure, I've been 100% groped on public transport as a guy; old lady flat out grabbed my cheeks with two hands.

  5. I won't express a judgmental opinion about Japan, because there is no country where men don't sexually assault women. A worldwide ethical and moral "re-education" of men is needed so that women are ultimately treated with the respect that men expect.
