UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that a new round of talks on the Cyprus issue will be held at the end of July, following the conclusion of Tuesday’s five-party meeting in Geneva.
He also said that he would soon appoint a special envoy for the Cyprus issue and highlighted that both sides had agreed on initiatives aimed at fostering mutual trust.
Furthermore, he announced that it was decided to open four new border crossings, establish a technical committee on youth, launch an environmental and climate initiative featuring solar energy in the buffer zone and restore cemeteries.
Guterres noted that while no progress had been made since the 2017 Crans-Montana talks, Tuesday’s talks marked a shift, with “substantial progress” achieved. He described the discussions as “constructive.”
