  6. FairPlay to the people who did sonic. They took the feedback on board and fixed that right away.

    They really fucked it up.

    As for most of the others I think it’s just the times have changed as has the industry. Cheaper and efficient methods will always be preferred

  7. the changes exist, because the new versions are cheaper to produce – see “new formula” for every food/drink, you liked … the new versions are just bad.

  10. To mess with Thomas The Tank Engine is tantamount to sacrilege.

    Even more recently, I saw my daughter watching the ‘new’ version’, and to my horror and disgust – Thomas had an American accent! I don’t know whether she’d just stumbled upon an American version or whatever, but that desecration killed a part of my childhood forever, a part that will never be resurrected.

    But overall, all the redesigns just make me wonder why everything has to be overly CG or Cartoony. They just look fucking weird 😭

  25. Captain Scarlet immediately springs to mind. I was so gutted when the new terrible version came out in the 2000s. I’d grown up with the Gerry Anderson puppets on VHS.

  31. All of the big downgrades are because they’ve moved from real life to CGI. Bob the Builder, Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and Thomas the Tank Engine were all stop-motion and Barney of course was just a guy in a suit.

    Things being real rather than CGI just makes a big difference in connecting with it.

  34. The loss of the original Thomas the tank was a tragedy. Not to forget the very very harsh realities that the program brought…. Not going to work because you’re not feeling it? Fine we will wall you up in a tunnel for weeks on end!

  49. A lot of them, certainly earlier children’s shows like Postman Pat or Thomas, I really feel like there’s warmth and love behind them. Like nobody involved is out trying to make a marketable product, they’re trying to make a thing kids will truly enjoy, because they want to make kids happy. Selling it to a TV network for money is almost just a happy accident. Like, I can imagine if Oliver Postgate hadn’t got a TV gig he would have been doing the exact same thing but only his grandchildren would ever have heard of Bagpuss.

    Modern shows and remakes of old ones really feel like they’ve had that heart torn from them. They’ve been designed to be (usually cheaper) mass marketable products by a large team, and while I’m sure they’re very good at that, there’s no love present.

    Does that sound weird? Simple nostalgia? Overly romanticising a past that might just be janky as heck? I don’t know, I just find the old ones cost and the new rather sterile.

    And that Thomas one is an abomination. Look what they did to my boy.

  50. Call me crazy but I don’t get the Shrek outrage. Did people expect Dreamworks to dig out an ancient, low res model from the old films and just roll with that?
    It looks fine to me
