I feel like the question with any strikes should always be do I agree with them getting something regardless of the job they do.
So for example if Chat GPT staff went on strike and turned it off or Google staff did the same, and they were demanding basic protections and rights yes I would. But if they were arguing they deserve privileged access to housing I wouldn’t.
So I don’t agree with them getting this tbh.
The RMT must’ve felt that public feeling against them has waned somewhat and so picked another wierd hill to publically die on.
Hotels in London used to have staff accommodation nearby or attached to the hotels. I lived in two of them when working in the industry. We paid rent of £40 a week for single rooms deducted directly from our wages (with council tax deductions). The rooms were quite small but adequate, we had shared bathrooms and laundry facilities. A common room and somewhere to prepare food.
The chain I worked for got taken over and almost immediately the new owners thought.. hmm, if we kick out the staff, refurb those buildings and sell them off we can make zillions.. so that’s what they did.
Hotel workers are not paid well and work extremely long and unsociable hours.
I’m giving this example as the same can be said for our most important public sector workers and they should have access to affordable, decent living arrangements and it should be by law!
This demand would be illegal for TFL to comply with under current Affordable Homes law (I work in the field). Changing it would unleash a massive csn of worms with constituencies demanding preferential access and preventing councils using properties for those most in need.
This must be denied, or the entire Affordable Homes legal structure will collapse.
They’re such monsters
And er what happens when they leave their jobs?
Pay rise, 4 day week, priority for affordable homes. What next, all tube staff to be addressed as Lord and Lady
I actually think there should be a stream of social housing for low paid workers in essential jobs. Some rmt members would meet that though not aslef members.
I mean where is anyone on minimum wage in london supposed to live? Even anything under 40k is not enough. Are those peoples job’s not valuable to the economy?
“So they’ll know where we live next time we go on strike? What could go wrong?”
The new build ‘affordable homes’ in Tottenham Hale start at £450,000 for a one bed flat.
The headline is meant to cause maximum outrage. They’re not asking for council housing, just the first opportunity to get shafted with the cost of housing in London.
lol this lot again. They think they are the most important people in London. world revolves around them
Fine, but only if frontline staff get the same treatment.
Was thinking we are due another RMT strike.
This is obvious bollocks. TfL exists for London, not RMT. Eddie, don’t spoil my crush on you!
Would the tube drivers even be eligible for affordable homes?
Train drivers have to be the most entitled people in the whole country. Surely if we can make self driving cars on roads with manual vehicles we can make self driving trains.
Given the average salary of an RMT driver, £59k, it’s quite likely many of them wouldn’t qualify for affordable homes, which still cap at £90k household income.
Unfortunately, that £90k limit hasn’t increased with inflation since it was established in 2016, so a lot of people who can’t afford a decent home also can’t get access to affordable home schemes because of this situation.
They may not be the worst off, but they’re also paying a lot more in taxes for not very much, and they’re certainly not rich either, 2x staff working on average NHS wages wouldn’t qualify, same with someone else’s example of cancer researchers, or teachers.
Absolutely fucking not. The most overpaid workers in the entire country that go on the strike the second they don’t get their way on something should NOT be first in the queue for their pick of the houses.
If anything, they need to start being seriously humbled.
Bring back employee housing.
Bring back live in artists too.
Give workers hope and happiness for the future.
The entitlement is surreal. Cry me a river.
GwR in the 1930s built a lot of houses for its workers in the hayes area . I work for tfL.and I am on about 30k so.not everyone is on a 60k salary.
The priority for the homes should be bus drivers over other tfl.staff.(Im not a bus driver)
1.)There is a shortage of bus drivers in London.
2.) Their shift pattern often takes it.upto the limit of what is legally permissable. Meaning the closer they live to tbeir garage the greatest gains can be made in safety.
3.)They are often low paid and relying on inwork benefits.
4.)Bus driver welfare is quite poor.
Er no
Delusional, self-centered, and scum.
When are they planning to hold the capital hostage again?

Yeah I’d join tfl tomorrow if this had any chance of happening
If anything they should go to people in healthcare and education. Congrats on driving a train, you definitely take priority over nurses and teaches.
DO NOT POST RUSSIAN OLIGARCH ANTI UNION PROPAGANDA AS NEWS
TFL staff can afford to pay market rates. Likely mortgage lenders love them.
They should just build more affordable housing , that is what Unions should aim for not just saving their ass. Working class not united is the slavers delight
Greedy cunts
the type of gluttony the bible talks about
Def I choose the wrong career..
Why don’t the RMT build houses? I wonder how much surplus cash they are sat on.
For some, maybe. The drivers can earn quite a bit of money.
Surprised the RMT aren’t striking until all tube workers get to live rent free in Mayfair, and given a £100 daily allowance for Fortnum and Mason. All in the name of safety of course.
lol don’t they get good wages by doing nothing. TFL is a mess
