It is possible that Russia has supported and paid some of the hundreds of thousands of unvetted illegal migrants who arrived via dinghies run by gangsters in Calais – how many of these are actually [subversive agents working on behalf of the Kremlin](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35706238)? We have no idea who these people are or who is funding them, but we just put them up in expensive hotels and let them stay anyway. Russia is exploiting our naivety.

   Western Europe needs to wake up to the hybrid warfare employed by Putin, they are willing to play dirty and this includes weaponising migration to destabilise social cohesion and then once that has happened start to sabotage critical infrastructure _etc_

6. I have to admit that that was my first thought when I heard the news. Obviously I hope a more mundane explanation is on the cards otherwise the implications are pretty grim.

7. I would be surprised if they weren’t being engaged. It doesn’t indicate there’s any serious suspicion though – just good practice.
