A new dedicated lane for vehicles with at least two passengers is now operational between the Gasperich interchange and the Berchem service station, with misuse of the lane incurring a fine of at least €74.

The Grand Ducal Police will monitor compliance to ensure only eligible vehicles use the lane, which is open 24/7 with a speed limit of 90km/h, reduced to 70km/h during peak hours.

The corridor, introduced on the A3 motorway as part of an expansion project, aims to improve traffic flow and promote sustainable transport, banning solo drivers from using it.

“The carpool lane on the A3 is a significant step toward a more sustainable and efficient transport system,” said Yuriko Backes, Minister of Mobility and Public Works in a statement. “This initiative not only improves traffic flow but also encourages environmentally friendly commuting, supporting our broader goals for a greener future.”

In addition to the three regular lanes, the breakdown lane will be open for buses (but not taxis) on the 2.1-kilometre section.

A public awareness campaign will inform drivers about the new rules. This initiative is part of the broader A3 motorway expansion project, which aims to ease congestion and accommodate growing traffic.

Future phases will include dynamic lane allocation and additional upgrades to meet the needs of Luxembourg’s residents and cross-border workers.
