  2. IIRC Franz-Ferdinand was actually there to try to reduce tensions with the Bosnians and meditate. He was one of the more modern, less imperialistic voices in his country. He was really the wrong guy to shoot at, and the assassins did that intentionally not because they had any grief specifically with him but because they were trying to start a war.

  3. I wonder if the archduke Ferdinand hadn’t been shot, what other “damned foolish thing in the Balkans” would have started the war. Bulgaria and Greece even had a short war shortly after the end of WW1, which started over a stray dog.
