After a taste of summer, Spain is about to get a rude awakening from the sunshine.
The Spanish state weather agency AEMET has confirmed that a new Atlantic storm system is moving in fast, and it’s set to bring rain, grey skies and cooler air to much of the country this week.
If you’re enjoying the sun, make the most of it today. Tuesday will be your last mostly bright and dry day, with just a few clouds expected across parts of the southeast. But from Wednesday onwards, it’s all change.
Heavy rain forecast across Spain this week
According to AEMET’s forecasts, heavy rain will start sweeping across the country midweek, soaking large parts of southwest Spain, the Atlantic coast and northern regions like Galicia and the Cantabrian coast. Thunderstorms and even hail are on the cards in those areas too, while snow could fall in the Pyrenees at elevations around 1,300 to 1,500 metres.
One silver lining? The country’s reservoirs, many already close to full, could see another much-needed boost.
On the flip side, eastern and Mediterranean regions might miss out on the rain altogether, staying mostly dry over the next couple of days.
Cooler temperatures midweek, brighter skies by the weekend
By Wednesday, we’ll also feel a drop in temperatures, especially in mountain zones and across Galicia. Meanwhile, valleys and inland plains could see things stay a bit milder. Looking ahead to Friday and the weekend, temperatures should creep up again — though don’t expect the highs we saw last week.
As for the weekend outlook, skies could stay fairly cloudy in the east and northeast, but for the most part, it’s looking dry across the country — with only Galicia possibly seeing a return of the rain.
