Over 75 thousand citizens in Bulgaria turned to the Ombudsman in 2024

More than 76,200 citizens in Bulgaria sought help, advice, protection or support from the Office of the Ombudsman in 2024, according to the institution’s Annual Report, presented to the National Assembly on Monday. The report, which by law must be submitted by the end of March, shows that the institution continues to enjoy high public trust, even though the positions of Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman are vacant.

The annual report also shows that 34,648 citizens were assisted through the institution’s service desk. During 2024, over 12,500 complaints were filed and 29,061 people sought support on various issues, including through petitions.

As in previous years, the majority of complaints (33.21% of the total) were related to violations of consumer rights, especially by electricity supply companies, water utilities, mobile operators, heating companies, banks, etc. The second largest category of complaints (17.60%) was related to violations of socio-economic rights, followed by violations of property rights (11%).
