A tragic traffic accident in Volos, which claimed the lives of two young individuals, has thrust the issue of imposing driving restrictions on the elderly back into the spotlight—particularly for nighttime hours.

The incident has reignited a heated discussion about whether drivers who have surpassed a certain age or suffer from health conditions that compromise their ability to drive safely should face stricter regulations. According to authorities investigating the crash, the 82-year-old driver of a pickup truck is likely at fault. Preliminary findings suggest that his inability to drive safely at night contributed to the fatal collision.

Under current Greek law, drivers whose medical conditions or other factors impair their ability to operate a vehicle after dark are barred from driving after sunset. These restrictions are clearly marked on new-style driving licenses (plastic cards) with the code “12.” One specific limitation, coded as “05.01,” permits driving only during daylight hours.

Vision Problems at the Wheel

The primary justification for such measures often stems from vision-related issues, which make nighttime driving particularly hazardous. Driving after dark already poses an elevated risk of accidents, as humans are naturally diurnal creatures. While our eyes can adjust to low-light conditions to some degree, age-related vision impairments significantly hinder clear sight at night.

The World Health Organization reports that at least 2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from vision problems, with the majority being over 50 years old. Among the conditions that may necessitate surrendering the keys is age-related macular degeneration—a common disorder that damages the macula, impairing both near and far vision. For those affected, everyday tasks, including driving, can become challenging or impossible.

As Greece—and indeed the world—grapples with an aging population, the question of when and how to restrict driving privileges remains contentious.
