Recently saw a documentary about War World 2. The UK population was never healthier, mostly because of hard work and rations.
“During WWII, the daily calorie intake in the UK through rationing was designed to be around 2,300 calories per adult, with extra rations for manual laborers, miners, pregnant women, babies, and the sick. Food rationing began in January 1940, four months after the start of World War II, and lasted for 14 years.”
Talking about men’s heath doesn’t mean not talking about women’s health. It isn’t a zero sum game….looking at you Ava Evans.
We should be in this together
bulling the damn corperates into making better food would be a start
I don’t think it’s a big mystery.
Men generally have a higher tolerence for risk exposure than women and thus are less likely to mitigate the health risks unhealthy lifestyle leads to.
I’m not sure sending men to the GP is the fix all it states. For example, I’ve been trying to get my age 40 health check since I turned 40. I’m nearly 42…
Well, when men make it their personality to eat ultra processed foods and to avoid healthy “womanly” foods. Whilst spending their downtime drinking and sitting at the pub, getting baked in the sun, you wonder, what went wrong? Why are these men so unhealthy?
Answer: they think its woke to eat vegetables
Why did they keep shoehorning the condom story in. Very odd.
Anecdotal obviously, but the obesity problem seems to be across genders.
The NHS taking an absolutely age and being highly ineffective when treating chronic health conditions hardly helps.
We’ve all given up.
Everyone working class is unhealthy after being in austerity for decades tbh
Living on cheap carbs and anxiety.
As with everything that Starmer does, the answer will be some bizarre authoritarian crackdown, with new, sweeping laws and some sort of “Tsar” appointed
Every beverage now is loaded with 5 cups of coffee worth of caffeine.
Huge intake of nicotine via palatable flavours. Can literally vape all day.
Drugs, huge amount of weed and coke users.
We’re unhealthy because one of the only joys we have is to smash in a 12inch pizza and a few beers every Saturday night to celebrate our one day off on a Sunday.
We’re leaving the house before 6am and getting back near 5pm. During that time we have to get in as many calories as humanly possible during the little break time we have. Luckily my wife makes me a home cooked meal three times a week and sorts the kids.
The UK way of living is an utter travesty.
Honestly, for me it’s just stress. I cook everything from scratch , I never have takeaways etc. and generally eat really healthily
But my job is an absolute cortisol fest. The hours are too long and there’s always some ‘critical’ job that needs doing. Once the stress kicks in, its crisps and wine time
If the government was actually serious about improving our health, a 4 day week should be made compulsory , to allow us more time to rest and go to the gym etc
Honestly, at first I was skeptical, but I’m buying more and more into the idea that the amount of hormones, chemicals preservatives, and microplastics in food and supplements is completely fucking up humans’ hormone regulation.
I think most men are just woefully low on testosterone because it either never gets produced and released, or is being broken down in the bloodstream.
Literally every single man I’ve ever known who’s had additional testosterone top-ups say it has completely changed their life; More energy, more focus, lower absorption of fat, greater and quicker ability to build musculature, etc.
I also think it’s shameful that women, by and large, can get pretty much whatever hormones they want or need via prescription from the NHS. I admit that the menopause is a really trying and often awful thing for women to endure, but they have options for taxpayer funded hormone treatments coming out the wazoo, whereas the NHS has just lazily kind of adopted this idea that yes, most men these days have terrible hormone imbalances, but that’s just life * shrug *, and that the best we get is being told to go to Andy’s Man Club and/or the gym.
Testosterone is a remarkably cheap and easy hormone to synthesise, and it’s wholesale price is very competitive when compared to eostrogen, insulin, etc. yet men are consistently denied hormone treatments on cost and availability, which is just a bullshit excuse more than anything else.
Men live the worse, most-suffering life of the two genders. Also, society views us as expendable utility and nothing more.
It’s less about health and more about the fact that we tend to do dumb things when young far more than girls
A lot of men are bus and lorry drivers and the obly place to eat is mcdonalds. they also work without toilets which can cause health issues.
Same with taxi and courier drivers.
Maybe there needs to be a network of canteens giving affordable healthy food
I take notice of what I eat, cycle to work 5 miles a day, don’t smoke like a chimney or drink like a fish and consider myself quite healthy for my age.
Its not dificult to do the bare minimum. I would guess that the majority of unfit men could fix that in 3 weeks by simply getting off their ass and doing what they know they need to do.
Most are just pretty lazy imo and prefer to make excuses than admit it to themselves
I’d say a lot of is a seditary life style, general stress poor health.
Whar could be done maybe making it easier on people in general work wise, making healthier options cheaper.
You could do what some other countries do tax unhealthy food a bit and put that tax into the health service. Make public transport and biking more accessible reducing the reliance on cars.
It’s not helped by the media constant shouting that the nhs is in crisis. My dad (60+) went to the doctor last year for the first time in a decade. And that’s only because he went to a work health screening and they found his blood pressure was 200/150, fuck only knows how long it’s been that high.
I’m no better, last time I saw a doctor was 2012, before that was a dentist in 2004. While the toxic masculinity culture of ignoring things certainly plays a factor in how healthy we are, most of us simply don’t know how healthy we are because we don’t seek advice and leave a small problem until it becomes an untreatable big problem.
What’s the general consensus with doctors appointments? I always thought you had to either do them when you were off or try an after work appointment or book holiday. I worked with a bloke last week that had a doctors appointment in the middle of the working day but I always assumed it would be unpaid or you had to work time back. I work for a large utility company.
I think it’s important to compartmentalize foods so you’re not overburdened by selection and can make seasonal meals quickly and efficiently
It’s something I’ve tried to incorporate. For example the past few days I’ve ate couscous, beetroot and greek yoghurt together for lunch/dinner with a generous amount of olive oil. It’s something I can whip up quickly and can also take a container to work for lunch. It’s also decently healthy too and not heavy
To break it down further. Try and treat each season like a separate food experience. In warmer weather go for lighter more ‘refreshing’ dishes, colder weather go for more comforting foods
Spring – Salads, Quiches, Yoghurt, Falafel Wraps, Egg Mayo sandwiches etc. Add houmous, feta, olives for a diverse taste. These are some of my go too’s but it’s important to find foods you like and go with them
Winter – Soups, Pies, Stews, Pasta with tomato sauce/meats, Stir Frys, Baked Potatoes.
Just a wee tip to hopefully make things more managable
I diabetic (born with it) and I think it’s actually helped me. I’m up at 5.15 every morning running, boxing or lifting weights. I eat next to no carbs and just pretty much meat and veg. There is no way I would if I wasn’t kind of force into it with my health. I’m sat in an office all day and when I’m home we usually don’t sit down until 9ish.
Commuting, long hours, poor food/diet, anxiety, too much screen time at work/ home…it’s not natural to not be moving and active. Lack of societal engagement in form of clubs/community/friends. Erosion of what it means to be a man.
Worked to hard.
Wah wah excuse after excuse
British men almost wear unhealthiness as a badge of pride. We’re such a cynical nation that extends to looking after yourself.
Is it “dying prematurely” if you intend to die as early as possible?
The unachievable expectations and sexualization of them (alongside the sexualization in general) leads more ppl to make healthy decisions than the complete lack of expectations and sexualization leads ppl to make healthy decisions
Lifestyle changes including dietary, exercise, will help….2 years keto / low carb never felt better
