Wild that he’s just 1 goal ahead after the exact same amount of games (1,487).
Assists are another story though as Gretzky has 1,963 while Ovechkin has ‘just’ 724
Almost 2,000 assists is an INSANE stat to be added to the goals. I’m a soccer guy, so these numbers seem insane to me lol
To get the full story, you have to understand the roster Gretzky skated with in Edmonton. It was ridiculously strong. Their first line could have just been copied and pasted into the all-star game. Without them, his goal record would have been shattered long ago, and his assist number would be a fraction of what it is.
So Gretzky front loaded a lot of his goals where Ovie had been pretty consistent through out his career. Like 31 goals at age 38 is the lowest he’s put up in a full season. In the lockout season and Covid season he was on pace to score over 40 and 30 goals respectively.
If he stays healthy and is able to put up 30+ for a few more seasons. He could hit 1,000. I haven’t watched him to know if this is a possibility or if he’s running out of gas trying to break this record.
I don’t really follow hockey.
But when I heard Ovechkin, my first thought was “impossible, he was playing 20 years ago”
Well wouldn’t you know.
65 short handed goals is absolutely bonkers
So Ovi is like LeBron…steady greatness. Gretzky is like Jordan…majestic peak.
Wow…solid list of goalies on the “shared trauma” list.
