April the 8th, 2025 – A huge Zagreb investment is set to result in a large underpass that will connect key parts of the capital.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, residents of the western part of the City of Zagreb have been hearing promises about the Medpotoki underpass for years now. Such a move would extend underneath one of the busiest roads in this part of the city (Aleja Bolonje) and create a long-awaited connection between the north and south, divided by the railway.
a zagreb investment that will result in an underpass by 2027
This is a major Zagreb investment that has been in preparation for many years now, and Mayor Tomislav Tomašević recently announced the start of work for the end of this year. If all goes well, that neighbourhood should get a new underpass by mid-2027 at the earliest, according to a report from Večernji list.
Not everyone is satisfied with the solution offered as part of this massive Zagreb investment that will result in a new underpass, however. A petition was also written up at one time. More recently, at the request of residents and the Gajnice Initiative, a public presentation was organised in the premises of the Susedgrad regional office, as part of which those gathered had the opportunity to ask numerous questions.
Among the presenters were Zagreb’s Head of Traffic Andro Pavuna, Head of the City Roads Sector Krunoslav Tepeš, Deputy Head of the City Office for Reconstruction, Construction, Spatial Planning, Civil Engineering and Communal Affairs Irena Matković, Danijel Zdolc from the City Institute for Spatial Planning, as well as the President of the Podsused-Vrapče City District Council Donat Radas and the President of the Stenjevec Local Board, Ivan Vedak.
concrete solutions for local residents
”The railway that was put in place in Zagreb back in 1862, as any urban planner will confirm, significantly changed the development of the city and enabled its natural expansion, both in the east-west direction and in the north-south direction. In this part of the city, especially on the southern side of the railway, little has been done over the years. When designing the Medpotoki underpass, we took into account the opinions of local residents, and we hope that we’ve managed to satisfy the majority and come to some concrete solutions,” said Matković.
Naturally, such an enormous project attracted numerous opinions, from those all for it to those dead against the idea. Those behind the project have stuck to their guns in the face of disapproval, however, referencing the Jarun Bridge (Jarunski most) and how not everyone can be satisfied all the time.
It has to be said that a Zagreb investment resulting in a brand new underpass would be an enormous shake up for the Croatian capital city.
