BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – New technology is coming to train crossings in Birmingham.
Trainfo is an alert system that uses cameras and sounds to alert drivers automatically when a train is blocking a railroad crossing.
The Birmingham City Council voted to approve the use of ARPA funds to install the technology. This is the first time a system like this has been installed in the state of Alabama.
Councilwoman Wardine Alexander said the inconvenience is a headache many Birmingham drivers deal with.
“It eliminates the frustration that motorists find when you’re on your way to church, to school, work,” said Councilor Alexander.
The technology will send drivers a notification that a train is stopped. That allows drivers to find a detour before they approach a blocked train.
“It’ll be automatic technology that’ll be used to alert the driver that you’re approaching a train site that is blocked,” said Councilor Alexander.
Trainfo will also send alerts to the Real-Time Crime Center to help first responders avoid a blockage.
“They will be able to alert first responders in that area who are trying to get to a home or any type of accident, where they’ll be able to divert their route and go a different way,” said Alexander.
Trainfo will be installed at the same crossings where Qwick Curb is being stalled.
