On Thursday, a NATO AWACS aircraft carried out a series of low flyovers at Luxembourg Airport, drawing the attention of onlookers eager to witness the rare sight.
NATO’s distinctive reconnaissance aircraft have become an increasingly common sight at Luxembourg Airport and in the skies above the Grand Duchy.
The aircraft in question are AWACS – short for “Airborne Warning and Control System” – known for the large radar dome mounted on their fuselage, giving them a unique and easily recognisable appearance.
On Thursday, one of these aircraft carried out a series of training flights at Findel. Rather than landing, the plane performed low passes over the runway before pulling up again, a manoeuvre known as a low approach or touch-and-go.
Thanks to the clear spring weather, the exercise drew a number of curious spectators eager to catch a glimpse of the striking aircraft in action.
