Delicatessen chain Cocottes is set to launch a new café and sandwich bar in the city centre to replace La Baraque, which has closed just four years after it opened.

The Cocottes café, which has a dining room measuring 30 square metres and a terrace, is tentatively set to open in early June.

La Baraque caused quite a stir when Cocottes opened the traditional Belgian fries outlet at 15 rue Aldringen.

But Cocottes director Clémentine Venck said that the chain, which is owned by founder Stéphanie Jauquet, recently decided to develop a new concept at the location.

“At Cocottes, we like to follow trends. And at the moment, trends are more towards hybrid venues that accompany their customers throughout the day. Less mainstream but more specialised,” Venck told Virgule.

Part café, part sandwich shop

“Demand is currently very strong for coffee and sandwiches. And that’s precisely what Cocottes café will focus on,” said Venck.

“In the morning, we’ll be offering the organic coffee that our customers love so much, as well as a great range of breakfasts. This will be followed by a variety of drinks and, above all, a wide range of sandwiches prepared to order using the quality products that Cocottes is used to offering,” she added.

The café will have a few competitors nearby, including Pain Quotidien, Prêt À Manger and L’Atelier Steffen. It will be open seven days a week, from 07:00 to 18:00.

Cocottes, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024, currently has 17 outlets in Luxembourg with an 18th shop due to open in Lallange in the autumn.
