Scrambling to limit the “dire” consequences of sweeping new US tariffs, the EU on Thursday told President Donald Trump the door remained open for trade talks — while threatening retaliation like targeting US Big Tech if negotiations fail. FRANCE 24’s David Keating reports from Brussels.

  1. Don’t negotiate. Ignore Trump, don’t contact him, except to cancel contracts. He is not worth ythe energy. Talk to other trading partners for alternatives.

  2. Do you want to sell in American market or not? We're not playing these games, doors have always been open to negotiate FAIR trade. American companies are ALL hiring right now, while layoffs are happening everywhere else in the world. It's only been a few days WHO'S WINNING?

  6. EU already fines them in regulation shakedowns. Trust me we expect the EU to go as low as low can get and we dont care. Go back to the stone age trying to prop up your social programs.

  7. The services are where it will hit them hard, around 70-80% of America's economy is service based, so it would be a major blow to them. There are many digital enterprise services in the UK / EU that can scale quickly when needed. The only thing would be consumer transition might take longer, but is still doable.

  8. Why are the rest of the world complaining about USA tariffs? Worldwide Countries wants to charge tariffs to the USA but the USA are not allowed to charge tariffs to them? This is unfair!

  17. The EU needs smart decisions. According to Trump, the EU has higher tariffs on the US than the US has on the EU… it's actually the opposite. And this is a golden opportunity for the EU to play dumb and say "ok, let's all bring the tariffs down to 0%" between the EU and the US. Trump will show it as a victory on TV, but EU is the real winner because EU will export even more to the US.

  22. EU shouldn't initiate tariffs talks with USA. EU should wait and see. During the waiting period, EU must come with a huge and mighty countertariffs solution. In addition, Again President Macron is right: don't invest in USA, disengage from USA, ditch USA the most possible, bits by bits. Don't give victory to Trump. EU is bigger and richer than USA.

  23. We need alternatives in the tech industry and streaming/entertainment platform services. For all the rest we do any and everything better.
