According to Reuters, Greece is currently negotiating the purchase of two second-hand ‘Bergamini’ class frigates from Italy, as announced by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced at a conference on Friday.
This negotiation is part of the country’s broader efforts to upgrade its military capabilities.
The Greek government plans to invest €25 billion over several years in a comprehensive defence modernisation program, which includes acquiring submarines and drones, as well as developing a sophisticated air and drone defence system.
Greece already allocates around 3% of its GDP to defense—nearly twice the European Union average.
The Greek government is also in negotiation with France over the potential acquisition of a fourth Belharra frigate equipped with cruise missiles.
