Independence from Britain is celebrated somewhere in the world roughly every six days. Here’s a map of every country that has gained independence from the UK.

  1. Wrong flag for 1948 if we’re talking about independence from Britain.

Israel has never been under Britain. It was created after Britain had already left. Should be a Palestinian flag.

  2. If one still has the Windsor Saxe Gothas as ones Head of State, does that truly imply independence?

The dominions were automatically assumed to declare war in 1939 (Canada, for instance, delayed by a week to draw the distinction)

  3. Other than “Brits bad”. What is the relevant of this to NI ?

  4. I wouldn’t include the tricolour on that list. We’re still partially under British occupation.

  5. I’m not slagging OP but lads do you ever just get tired of having the same conversations over and over and over again? No wonder our elected officials are just spending their time squabbling over signage when our public services go into even more of a heap by the day.

  6. They really were/are a shower of bastards. Textbook British Empire colonial strategy was conquer the local king/chief/sultan, draw up antagonistic borders to create perpetual internal conflict between tribes/castes/religions, keep a garrison there to police the infighting and keep sucking the wealth out in cargo holds of the Royal Navy and back to London. Hammer one group, then if the “other” lot get too powerful they hammer them back down and back the originals. Keep everyone away from getting strong enough to achieve sovereignty and independence, promote bloodshed bitterness and hate for as long as possible.

I wish Unionists would step back and see that the Brits don’t think of them as fellow Brits or even equals at all, and never have – in the Brits’ eyes ulster Unionists are just the same as Kurds/Bengals/Zulu/Cherokee in the other colonies: useful locals. If the ulster prods ever got too independent and organised and started interfering with taxation and tariffs then the brits would have simply switched to supporting the catholics until the power balance switched favourably to them again. Look at the border – no need to have South Armagh or West Tyrone in the North, they did it anyway because they knew there’d be literal murder over it, and thousands of murders there was.

Unionists have been used like so many others by the Brits. Time and again. Tories were at it within the last decade to keep Boris Johnson in a grubby government, and to ram through Brexit. Would love to hear a mature respectful argument to the contrary, I’m not trying to get a rise out of anyone here.
