I literally have the best luck with planning trips. So… I always wanted to go to Denmark, and so (well now) a couple years ago I get this whim, I start planning this quick longer weekend. Copenhagen, in winter. I am strong like my Northern European ancestors. (Not the wussy southern American I am now.)
Fast forward to the trip is getting closer, I start to set news alert to the country I’m visiting, just to get caught up with that’s going on in the destination. Last new year day, the big announcement happens. Oh no! The queen is stepping down.. she deserves it — great lady. Okay. When is the coronation? THE WEEKEND I AM THERE!
It was amazing. I get to the airport – so many journalists. Take the (hands down most amazing subway!) to my hotel. Pop up in the town square. There is a stage! There are flags everywhere! The parades! The souvenirs! The news on in the hotel are doing English (thank you) video package on her life, the country, her rule, a wrapped up history lesson perfectly!
I do my planned itinerary with some tweaks due to timing and crowds and you know, I’m coming back to Copenhagen after visiting this castle up by Sweden (peak Europe), and I stand in the square I watch as Queen Margarethe drive by she waves I’m waving like an idiot. The (soon to be) king and his amazing wife drive by, I wave like an idiot, they wave. I’m given a flag. I’m in square with fellow Danes, we are hugging we are watching we are so happy. It is, and I mean this, one of the best, most amazing experiences of my life.
Sorry for the long post, but after the most perfectly perfect long weekend there is nothing more that I can say than to the Queen of Denmark: madam, you are so loved by your people. Have the best most amazing birthday. I was truly TRULY honoured to have shared just the smallest smidgen of your wonderfully amazing life.
