To the West, the United States stares into the abyss—its democracy on the brink, its institutions eroded, its people divided and disarmed against a rising tide of fascism.
And in between, amid the noise, the doubt, the self-deprecating jokes—stands us.
Western Europe.
Too bureaucratic to move quickly.
Too proud to ask for help.
Too stubborn to fall.
We are not perfect—but in this moment, we are what’s left.
We are the last steady beacon of democracy, liberty, and justice.
And if we fall—if we falter—there may be no one left to restart the engine of freedom.
So no, this is not just about Ukraine.
It’s not just about America.
It’s about all of us.
About whether open societies can survive a century that is already turning cold and hard.
We will not win this by being clever.
We will win this by being courageous.
So let’s set aside our sibling squabbles.
Let’s stop counting who pays what into NATO.
Let’s stand—together—not because we always agree, but because we still believe.

We’ll also have to collaborate with the Chinese and possibly India too.
