The second hand embarrassment. Sheesh.
I always thought the American resentment towards Europe and countries like Japan was rooted in a kind of realization that their quality of life has fallen behind these countries. Anyone who goes to Norway or Japan or Korea and compares it to the US will instantly see the difference, the streets are cleaner, the public transit is much more efficient, the food is safer etc., they have their issues to be sure, but they’re a dream next to the US which can’t even keep the glitzy downtown areas clean and safe. It’s not made up in terms of healthcare outcomes either. On pretty much every metric the US comes up short despite being so wealthy. As a country we can fix these issues, we just choose not to.
How does it relate here? Well it seems like now China is surpassing the US in terms of Quality of Life, at least in the big cities. They have the largest HSR network and are seen as the place where the cutting edge is happening. To be surpassed by Europe or Japan was one thing, but by China is extra embarassing.

Only the police have guns. Obviously gun violence is lower . Is this something Americans want?
What is their death penalty rate? Could fear of death be deterring crime in addition to being an easy way to lower prison populations while increasing cemetery populations?
I’m as against the direction America is heading as much as the next person here, but to think China is better than us is sad. Go live there if you like it so much.

China definitely had more covid deaths… they just didn’t report them they also welded people into their apartments.. people starved to death.. I’m not agreeing with stephonic.. but you can’t blanket all this
