In 2024, consumption of crude rape, colza or mustard oil in the European Union surged to 7.6M tons, rising by 39% compared with the year before. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2013 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, consumption decreased by -27.7% against 2022 indices. The volume of consumption peaked at 10M tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The revenue of the crude rapeseed oil market in the European Union skyrocketed to $8.3B in 2024, increasing by 36% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption posted slight growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $14.8B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Consumption By Country
Germany (3.3M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of crude rapeseed oil consumption, comprising approx. 43% of total volume. Moreover, crude rapeseed oil consumption in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, France (962K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (811K tons), with an 11% share.
In Germany, crude rapeseed oil consumption increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-2.0% per year) and Poland (+13.1% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($3.6B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($1B). It was followed by Poland.
In Germany, the crude rapeseed oil market increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-2.5% per year) and Poland (+12.7% per year).
The countries with the highest levels of crude rapeseed oil per capita consumption in 2024 were Belgium (62 kg per person), Germany (40 kg per person) and the Czech Republic (33 kg per person).
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +23.0%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2024, approx. 7.8M tons of crude rape, colza or mustard oil were produced in the European Union; increasing by 41% against the year before. The total production indicated slight growth from 2013 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, production decreased by -22.9% against 2022 indices. Over the period under review, production attained the peak volume at 10M tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, production failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude rapeseed oil production skyrocketed to $8.5B in 2024 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 37%. The level of production peaked at $14.5B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, production remained at a lower figure.
Production By Country
The country with the largest volume of crude rapeseed oil production was Germany (3.6M tons), accounting for 46% of total volume. Moreover, crude rapeseed oil production in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (1.4M tons), threefold. Poland (806K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume in Germany amounted to +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+0.7% per year) and Poland (+5.5% per year).
ImportsEuropean Union’s Imports of Crude Rape, Colza Or Mustard Oil
After six years of growth, purchases abroad of crude rape, colza or mustard oil decreased by -27.2% to 1.7M tons in 2024. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 2.3M tons in 2023, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, crude rapeseed oil imports shrank significantly to $1.9B in 2024. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $3.6B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports By Country
In 2024, the Netherlands (518K tons), distantly followed by Belgium (329K tons), Germany (167K tons), Spain (121K tons), Poland (102K tons), Sweden (100K tons) and Latvia (100K tons) were the major importers of crude rape, colza or mustard oil, together mixing up 86% of total imports.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest crude rapeseed oil importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($560M), Belgium ($348M) and Germany ($190M), together comprising 57% of total imports. Spain, Sweden, Poland and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Among the main importing countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +14.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2024, the import price in the European Union amounted to $1,154 per ton, increasing by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $1,590 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Sweden ($1,220 per ton) and Germany ($1,136 per ton), while Latvia ($869 per ton) and Poland ($1,035 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
ExportsEuropean Union’s Exports of Crude Rape, Colza Or Mustard Oil
In 2024, the amount of crude rape, colza or mustard oil exported in the European Union reduced sharply to 1.9M tons, falling by -19.4% compared with the previous year’s figure. Overall, exports showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 2.4M tons in 2023, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, crude rapeseed oil exports fell significantly to $2.1B in 2024. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $3B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
Germany (504K tons) and France (456K tons) represented the major exporters of crude rape, colza or mustard oil in 2024, finishing at near 26% and 24% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (249K tons), Belgium (196K tons), the Czech Republic (144K tons) and Poland (97K tons), together generating a 36% share of total exports. Latvia (83K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +17.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest crude rapeseed oil supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($557M), France ($490M) and the Netherlands ($275M), with a combined 64% share of total exports. Belgium, the Czech Republic, Poland and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Latvia, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
In 2024, the export price in the European Union amounted to $1,083 per ton, waning by -6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $1,613 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($1,105 per ton) and Germany ($1,105 per ton), while Latvia ($942 per ton) and Poland ($1,051 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
