Estonia is one of several European countries with no history of nuclear power that is now preparing to embark on a civil nuclear program, largely on the back of the aspirations of Fermi Energia to build two small modular reactors (SMRs). Fermi aims to follow Canada’s Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Poland’s Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) and the US-based Tennessee Valley Authority in the deployment of GE-Hitachi’s BWRX-300, a 300 megawatt light-water SMR that OPG is preparing to move into construction at its Darlington SMR project in Ontario. Energy Intelligence’s Phil Chaffee spoke with Fermi CEO Kalev Kellemets on the sidelines of the Canadian Nuclear Association’s annual meeting in Ottawa last week. A transcript of their conversation, edited for clarity and brevity, follows.
