1. Is this not the new disposition of the church? It seems that the next pope will assume these duties as all the other shoes he will have to fill.

2. Statement:

   The Pope, as the head of state of the Vatican and the spiritual leader for over a billion people worldwide, is an inherently political position with global influence. Though some papacies have been less involved in affairs of state, Pope Francis has made it part of his mission to involve the church in ongoing challenges around the world: the north-south divide, the climate crisis, and rising populist and nationalist movements. It will bear watching to see if his successor maintains similar outward-focused interests.
