DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — Just a month away when Dayton will welcome delegates from around the world for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Congressman Mike Turner (R-10th District) Ohio spoke with high school students representing Montgomery County Student Advisory Delegation on Friday.

“What’s really great is to hear what’s important to them, the issues that they think are important, things, current events, what they’re listening,” said Turner.

These sessions at the Montgomery County Education Service Center are meant to help students learn lessons from area leaders you can’t get in a classroom.

“And when you go beyond that in the real world, you seem to really understand how the government works and that congressman and senators, they’re just people like us,” said Mahir Kaida, Centerville High School.

Turner took questions about his career as public servant but also answered questions about the upcoming NATO Parliamentary Assembly being held in Dayton on May 22-26. That global event is bringing about 1,000 elected officals, legislators throughout the world to Dayton.

Turner says city and state leaders have been working together to make sure Dayton is ready.

“Everyone has been working together in a way that is going to make this a success. It’s going to be secure. It’s going to show off this city as a world-class city,” Turner said.

Back in the classroom, students say it’s vital to get their voices and those of other people in our schools not being heard out into the real world.

“You can make those calls; you can go to your representatives, and it’s really empowering to know that I can make a difference and that there are options, and there are ways to get involved and influence change,” said Eva Holler, Brookville High School.

Dayton 24-7 Now will continue to follow the lead-up to and the assembly itself next month.
