Anyone know what these massive concrete blocks are for?

  1. I’ve got no idea what they are for. But my guess is foundations for a steel structure to hold the outside of the building while they remove and renovate the inside?

  2. I came here to say this. Grade 2 listed facade so will be supported with steelwork while the building behind is demolished and rebuilt. Concrete blocks will then be removed.

  3. I wonder.. if we’re going to have 3d printers able to replicate perfectly a grade 1/2 facade in the near future, will there still be an intrinsic value in maintaining the old ones that are crumbling and often unfit for habitation?

  4. it looks like the counterbalance weight from a crane?

  5. Yo momma asked for a bench so she could sit across the street from you.

  6. Kentledge blocks for the temporary works for retained facade?

  7. I drove past today and wondered the same thing. Possibly a mounting point for a crane, or tp support temporary steel shoring as no-more-cowbell suggests.

  8. Like others have suggested this is likely the structural concrete base for a steel Facade retention system to follow. They are commonly required to give structural support for the external listed fabric, while the team demos internally and rebuilds with a new RC frame.

  9. I mean despite the reason behind them, they are some lovely concrete blocks, can’t underestimate how difficult it is to pour shapes with concrete.

  10. To stop “terrorist cars” driving into the building
