The heavy reliance on imported timber risks undermining its own net-zero strategy and, in the process, will increase global emissions. That is according to a new study published in Nature Communications, highlighting the urgent need for the world’s second-largest importer to expand its forest canopy to meet growing demand.
“Our study highlights three major challenges for UK forestry,” according to Bangor University Professor John Healey, senior author of Temperate Forests Can Deliver Future Wood Demand and Climate-Change Mitigation Dependent on Afforestation and Circularity, published last Friday.

We will never ever meet our carbon goals or the 1.5c limit if we did absolutely everything in our power, such as fully renewable, consumed less, did constant cover in our forestry, etc but still ate animals as this would take us over the 2c limit just from the consumption of animal products.
Not forgetting that animal-ag here in Wales is also the lead cause of environmental destruction (completely forgetting carbon aims).
And you wont see a single mention of this on Welsh govt policy or with Climate Cyrmu who just focus solely on carbon/emissions and not actual environmental destruction, which is absurd as we rely on the actual environment for our life systems (oxygen, soil, water, etc)
[https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/14/21/14449](https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/14/21/14449) Study finds that all dietary patterns cause more GHG emissions than the 1.5 degrees global warming limit allows. Only the vegan diet was in line with the 2 degrees threshold, while all other dietary patterns trespassed the threshold partly to entirely and upwards of 4c.
If we ourselves won’t try and fix this, who will and if not now, when? This is urgent and there are family and friends much younger than us who are inheriting Wales and the world we live in so we must act.
EDIT: Downvote all you want, this does not change the environmental destruction animal-ag has done and continues to do to Wales’ landscape.
And as proven by the commenter below me, there is nothing being done to remove animal-ag from Wales’ landscape either and we think a few token gestures and greenwashing terms will help us.
It doesn’t matter. Wales can do what it wants. Ain’t going to change a thing.
Net zero is a grift.
The UK makes up around 1% of global emissions, no matter what we do as a society we will never make a meaningful impact on global emissions.
So why bother destroying our economy and industry so we can ship emissions abroad so they can be produced in another country instead.
Better to focus on a cleaner environment, clean rivers, clean streets. Opening up more green spaces and reforesting where possible.
Oh right, let’s stop building houses and we won’t need any wood at all will we, somebody tell Mark Drakeford, that sort of ludicrous idea is right up his street.
Net zero is a scam, wake up
