So, I have posted a few pictures of a split between North and South, but I really haven't pointed out for what I need it, So I will in here to, hopefully, get a clearer answer.
Since I bore myself to death with my free time I love to create fictional scenarios, including the beautiful game, Football.
Thus, I thought:„Hey, Why don't I cross the German and the English Football system for my little group?”
So, at some point I have to divide up the country and Since I am crossing the Footie system with the German one, and Germany having Non-leagues based on specific borders and not on geography closeness, I have to decide what part of England belongs to the North, and which part belongs to the south in order to create a "good enough" line where I have a good club distribution and that's cultural acceptable. Sorry btw for the Midlands.

  1. We already have leagues based on location. National League North and South.

  2. Having a conference system with playoffs could be a good way to shake things up actually. Would generate funding for lower league clubs that now find themselves in a higher league on their side.

  3. I think a “ regional-cultural” spit doesn’t really exist anymore.

People moving about a lot more over the last 75yrs and globalisation has led to alot of changes.

I think it’s more a “ rural and small industrial town/cities” vs “Large urban areas ”, is where the divide exists.

Many parts of the south are a lot more like the north , than they are to London or some of the very wealthy towns.

  4. If you include the Midlands, it makes sense.

Following the “regions of England” that are used for stats purposes is a good guide, as they line up quite well at least in terms of countries. The only real issue with that approach is with some distinct areas of border countries: the Peak District juts into the North while being part of Derbyshire, and North/North East Lincolnshire are split off to be included in Yorkshire & the Humber (and thus the North).

  5. The South of the North ends at the Ribble and Humber. Everything South of that is Midlands.

  6. Gloucester to Norfolk dipping under Northampton is the south.

  7. As a Nottinghamian, I find the 3rd one quite fun, with the Anglican diocese of Southwell Nottingham being in the north, but completely surrounded by the south.

If dividing up for a league, probably makes the most sense to split it by population, since that’s likely to be the largest factor in terms of the number of clubs. If it were trying to divide up the country based on an observation of north-south identity, I would say STOP THE MIDLANDS ERASURE, but that’s not so much an issue here.

  8. Misses The West. The SW and the border counties aren’t really north or south. Feel is different.

  9. The 50/50 north south divide will always be pushed south because of London. Any other divide will have the North/South border further North.

  10. Every “north/south” divide map that omits the midlands is immediately invalid

  11. There needs to be an East divide. I’m sick of being considered a southerner

  12. The North/South divide if you don’t have a Midlands is from the Humber to the Wash. All industrial cities are located in the North, i.e. Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Leeds, Bradford, Hull, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Preston, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Leicester, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Coventry. Any line drawn must put those cities in the ‘North’. It’s a defining characteristic of the South that it does not have industrial cities.
