Australia’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has launched a new website honoring Australian service personnel who served on the northern Aegean island of Lemnos during World War I.

The Lemnos Remembrance Trail website provides public access to this often-overlooked chapter of the nation’s military history, The Greek Herald reports.

Located less than 100 km from the Gallipoli Peninsula, Lemnos served as a key logistical base, staging point and medical hub during the Gallipoli campaign – an unsuccessful British-led effort aimed at removing the Ottoman Empire from the war. The 110th anniversary of that campaign was commemorated on Anzac Day this year.

Launched on April 22, the digital platform marks the first phase of the broader Lemnos Remembrance Trail initiative. A second phase, involving the physical construction of the trail on the island, is scheduled to begin in the coming months and is expected to be completed by Anzac Day 2026.

The website features a collection of rare photographs depicting life on Lemnos from late 1914 through early 1916. It also presents personal stories of those who served on the island, highlighting both the hardships they endured and the resilience they demonstrated.

The project aims to raise awareness of Lemnos’ role in the Anzac legacy and encourage visitation once the trail is complete. In the meantime, the website offers a digital gateway for Australians and global audiences to explore the island’s wartime history.
