  1. No. But they could have done more from 2000-2013 to keep it from happening in 2014.

  2. Not really. If they had foreknowledge, sure, but no one does.

  3. Prior to 2014, Ukraine barely had a functional military. It was also heavily integrated with the Russian military, and there was a lot of intelligence sharing between Russia and Ukraine. Even had the country not been in the midst of a revolution at the time, it’s unlikely they could have effectively resisted.

    I don’t think most people appreciate how much Ukraine has changed since then. It basically *was* part of Russia in a lot of functional ways. The seizure of Crimea and the war in Donbas was a deep betrayal to Ukrainians in many ways.
