SS: Cyprus and Israel are expediting plans to establish an undersea electricity link aimed at ending their energy isolation. Cypriot Energy Minister George Papanastasiou emphasized that Israel seeks access to Cyprus’s energy reserves, including both conventional and renewable sources, for emergency use.
The electricity link project was reaffirmed during a meeting between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both leaders highlighted the strategic geographical importance of linking Europe and the Middle East and agreed to explore a trade, energy, and digital connectivity corridor under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) initiative, introduced at the 2023 G20 summit.
Turkiye however is objecting to the initiative because it believes that the cable passes through waters under their jurisdiction and both Israel and Cyprus would require Turkiye’s permission.
Turkiye objecting to something Cyprus does? Shocking!
