The new meadows will be located near the Academic Centre of the University of Latvia, as well as near the swimming pool of Rīga Technical University. Urban meadows will also be created in Skanste Park, the renovated part of Uzvaras Park and the promenade of the Buļļupe River.
With the new wild plant oases, Riga will have 45 sites with a total area of 16 hectares in its urban meadow network. The first urban meadows were established by the LDF in 2021.
Rūta Sniedze-Kretalova, botanist at the LDF and creator of the urban meadows, said: “In our experience, urban meadows also act as a neighbourhood unifier, bringing people of all kinds together to work together, and we are very pleased to see that our community is also increasingly appreciating more natural areas instead of neatly mown lawns.”
Throughout the summer, LDF will encourage everyone to get involved in the development of urban meadows by collecting meadow plant seeds, taking part in site management and meadow clean-ups.
