Kiawah Island expansion could add community space for residents and beyond

  • 06.05.2025

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) – Kiawah Island town leaders are considering expanding their municipal complex, which could provide a public meeting space even for those who don’t live on the island.

Mayor Bradley Belt said the town is in the exploratory phases of potentially expanding the municipal building by adding a new wing.

Tuesday’s town council meeting covered a variety of topics, including the potential expansion. The mayor said the goal would be two-fold: to provide additional community meeting space and add a high-quality facility for the presentation of performing arts and cultural and historical events programming.

The expansion would add a new wing to the existing Town of Kiawah Island Municipal Complex.

The council is considering whether they want to go forward with a design competition process. If that’s approved, the council would have to outline the design for the project, the timeline, cost, and potential uses for the space.

“Because it’s a municipal facility, my expectation is that if we go forward with this project, there is a lot of work to be done, that it will be utilized not only by Kiawah residents and Kiawah community organizations but more broadly for the Johns Island community and community organizations around the sea islands as well,” Belt said.

Belt emphasized they are in the early phases of considering this project.

He said once they have a better idea of the cost and a more detailed idea of what the project would look like council will decide if they want to move forward.
