New US-Ukraine minerals deal marks post-aid partnership • FRANCE 24 English

A little earlier, we spoke to our correspondent Fraser Jackson in Washington. The announcement didn’t really give many details, but we have some clues from previous iterations of the deal. The agreement will establish an investment fund between the US and Ukraine in coordination with a mineral resource agreement between the two countries. Now, there was a last minute snag on the signing as the US wanted the main minerals resources agreement and the creation of the fund uh documents to be signed at the same time. Well, Ukraine had planned to do those at different times, but that hurdle ultimately was overcome with Ukraine adding that it retained full sovereignty over its own rare earth minerals, uh, which of course are critical for many things, including batteries. Ukraine’s prime minister said the fund will be replenished with contributions from the United States and Ukraine. The fund’s profits will be reinvested exclusively in Ukraine. So, a hint there that the money will be used to rebuild Ukraine after this war. and so much of it has been destroyed by continuous Russian onslaught. Ukraine’s deputy economic minister also said before the deal was signed uh that this uh was not about uh basically allowing uh the US to get its money back that it had put into Ukraine. It’s he said it’s not aimed at repaying for US support for Ukraine but on giving the US the opportunity to profit from its defense of Ukraine through investments. That however different wording from what the Treasury said. They said in recognition of the significant financial and material support that the people of the US have provided to the defense of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion, this economic partnership positions our two countries to work collaboratively and invest together to ensure that our mutual assets, talents, and capabilities can accelerate Ukraine’s economic recovery. Notable there though that they do say the words Russia’s fullcale invasion. perhaps a slight change in language from the Trump administration, but ultimately no real security guarantees for Ukraine. Of course, this uh deal is hoped to keep Donald Trump’s interest in the country, but uh in terms of missiles and long-range defenses that the Europeans had been pushing for, uh those security guarantees are are nowhere to be seen.

The US and Ukraine signed a delayed minerals deal, with Ukraine retaining control over its rare earths. Seen as a shift from military to economic support, the accord aims to boost long-term US investment. Treasury Secretary Bessent called it a signal of lasting commitment to Ukraine and warned that Russia’s backers will be barred from reconstruction efforts.   5. Who's gonna build/operate the mines when a large portion of young men have died fighting. Gonna need to completely rebuild the infrastructure which the US can't do in their own country.

  9. Liberal NATO, without USA. Turkey and Hungary, are far stronger than Russia. We can easily make Ukraine win, but it takes politicians brighter than Starmer, Macron and Scholz (the latter luckily gone). Russia is weak.

    It is not post-aid partnership, it is post-defeat extraction ! Ukraine will not be signing a deal giving 100% to US till its US assigned debt is washed off. It will now give 50% and do the debt clearance in twice the time. The US will come out most profitable. War for profit has been a US business model for years.

    The Europeans got nothing from giving money to Ukraine, they would be wishing for a 'post-aid partnership' for themselves !

  15. Zelensky is the ultimate conman. He has now sold the remnants of Ukraine to both the UK and the US.😂 I would not be surprised if the EU also has some form of agreement, that is not worth the paper it is printed on.😂

  16. Rats, Trump should've struck a similar minerals deal with Afghanistan's Ghani government. The Taliban would've kept hiding and Trump could still have withdrawn all US troops. The logic is impeccable.
