Stupid, closing roads transfer traffic to neighbouring streets causing congestion. Enjoy!

It’s really easy to tell in times like this when people complaining are just complaining because they have a blanket pro-car mentality and don’t have a clue about the specifics of the actual area in question.
The neighbouring roads are more than equipped to handle the diversions this would cause – it’s a road which is closed to traffic half of the time anyway, and alternate routes are incredibly straightforward. If I needed to drive through Deptford I’d try and avoid this street even if it was an option.
Some people just blindly hate progress it seems.
This is great; it’s a busy area and already pedestrianised often for the market, and through traffic is already meant to run parallel on the next street.
This is I think good for the local businesses.
Then tomorrow the Nimbys will complain about pubs and kill the culture of areas whilst morons cheers this gentrification on
As always the downvotes prove my point.
I walked through there the other week. Was asked to withdraw money from the cash machine for a bloke in a dress with no teeth.
The smell of fish from the nearby stalls meant that, even if I were willing, my eyes were watering so bad that I wouldn’t have been able to correctly enter my PIN number.
Oh, and I watched a woman watch her child take a shit on the pavement.
I love a bit of alternative culture, me!
This makes sense on paper but the community pushback also makes sense. Specifics aside, people just don’t trust redevelopment or anything gentrification related anymore.
Pedestrianising the area, making it more attractive for new businesses- all of this sounds amazing, but also risks killing off the character of the area. There are already plenty of pointless yuppie coffee shops and craft beer spots. Making it more attractive to those types could price locals out which would be a shame since Deptford still had a great community vibe.
Edit: I should say I’m not 100% against it myself. I’m just pointing out the complexity of the issue. Of course, areas should not be allowed to just dilapidate. However, this isn’t so much a community service as an investment, the council are expecting this to bring them a return. Look at Brixton for example. Gentrification was of course needed, the area was a hotspot for gang crime. No qualms there, but you can see it is now full of trendy restaraunts.
People may not be as happy when this happens to an area like Deptford, because despite what some people want you to believe, the area is not especially dangerous. Of course have your wits about you but 2000s Brixton this is not. A similar process happening to Deptford would thus feel pretty unfair.
I’ll be honest. I’m dead against it.
As someone who lives in Deptford I think it’s a fantastic idea
Isn’t the road already basically pedestrian anyway
Thanks for flagging, OP. I’m a local resident and will absolutely be supporting this!
I’m not a local but go to that area for gigs and chill and this is definitely great news to anyone who is not a raging Jeremy Clarkson-esque boomer
The high street hopefully will flourish more with this
I love Deptford High Street. I lived just round the corner for years. Pedestrianisation will make it even better.
This is simply fast tracking gentrification and will eventually kill off and out-price many of the local shops and traders that make the high street unique. The high street is in no way congested, this is blatant greenwashing. The company who have designed the pedestrianisation proposal are a private security company who also own a bailiffs and make monitoring equipment.
As a Deptford local this is a terrible idea. It’ll make it so much harder to access business and homes. A lot of people can’t walk far distances, where are taxis supposed to collect them from. God forbid anyone needs an ambulance.
I’m all for this and responded to the consultation as well as the drop in session.
This will be so great for the high street. It’s not just the pedestrianisation but more trees, benches and street art by local artists. What’s not to like? It’s making a great high street even better.
I even responded to the campaign opposing this asking pointing out they’re prioritising those wealthy enough to own and drive a car in zone 2 London than the actual local community that walk to their high street. But they blocked me instead of engaging
