So I thought I take the time to post footage of HMS Belfast firing her guns to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

For context I'm a volunteer on board the ship and was given special permission to record the guns firing on board and had setup two cameras on the deck with my camera phone on the Compass Platform ("bridge") and put together and sync'd the footage and audio together.

It had taken the pyrotechnic crew a few days to setup which not only included the 6-inch guns but also the 4-inch guns (side guns) and the 40mm BOFORS guns (bridge guns).

Let's just say they all went off with a bang…

  1. I had no idea the guns could still be fired, assumed a museum ship would have had them deactivated?

  2. I had no idea those guns were still serviceable. When those guns were fired on D-Day in ‘44 it was my grandfather who was radioing her crew the targets positions from his SeaFire.

  3. My step grandfather (still alive – he’s 103) was on a warship during World War 2. I ‘m going to send him this footage – thanks for sharing.

  4. Wow, excellent work both doing it and filming it. Wish I could have seen it.

I wonder how many commuters on London Bridge shat their pants when they went off.

  5. Strangely ‘Back in the USSR’ by the Beatles popped into my head watching this
