it’s becoming an epidemic of school closures in London
Who would have thought that Brexit would have negative consequences?
Its crazy reading all these stories of school closures in London, when most of the schools around us are oversubscribed.
Wandsworth is a weird borough tbh. Very young population mostly without kids. It has a really low council tax because they don’t have the spending levels on senior care or schools and unemployment etc. It’s a massive generalisation but people move out when they have kids, and there is also a considerable international population (like thise housed in corporate lets in the roads either side of the Northcote by the banks they work for) who go back to their own countries when their kids reach school age.
They rejected planning for 110 home about 10 minutes from that school.
We can’t afford to live in our own city and/or too broke to have kids and gentrifiers either send their kids to private school or don’t have any either ergo another “crisis”. Not really a crisis tbh, the world is too overpopulated
All these immigrants coming over here ,not having kids which resulted in the shutting down of our primary schools.
> > There are few children in the reception class, but we already spent capital costs of the building and organisation! Should we use this opportunity to have smaller and more focused classes that have better results for the students?
> > Of course not, if there are not at least 35 screaming children in each class then primary education is not a profitable investment.
This mentality is the exact reason why British schools have been failing for the past decades. This is like closing a hospital because the waiting times are too short.
People are being priced out of London.
That and people can’t afford to have children
I used to go to this school, and it always had small classes. When I was there, my year only had 18 people in one class. The school I moved from, literally just down the road, had around 30 kids in two classes for one year group.
Honestly, I think the school just had too much competition. Within a 15-minute walk from St. Anne’s, there were at least two bigger schools that just seemed better equipped
People aren’t having children because it’s too expensive, this seems to be an issue everywhere in the western world because we are all suffering from late stage capitalism issues.
There needs to be a massive shift in the cost of living primarily through reducing housing costs but no party will do that because it would be massively unpopular with the older demographic who vote. The outrage from taking away winter fuel payments from people who don’t need it would be nothing in comparison.
Instead it seems to be policy to try and make borrowing cheaper to sustain prices without addressing the issue this creates with people needing two incomes to cover mortgage/rent and then not being able to afford children.
Perhaps the people who live in this bit of wandsworth send their kids to private schools?
Major demographic shift of young families moving to Outer London for more space post covid.
So stupid. Instead of them having a great start with teachers who can spend time with them they will end up in a huge class and become lost in the crowd.
The truth is it’s just too expensive to buy a property that would work for a family. We used to live southeast London but moved away when we had baby #2 because our 2 bed 1 bath house just wasn’t going to work for us anymore.
We were able to buy a much bigger property and my kids goto schools with bigger outdoor space. I am still commuting to London which sucks for me but overall quality of life is better for my kids where we are now.
