The eagle is still very small and sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so its mother Spilve constantly warms and feeds it. The father is responsible for providing the food, but is also involved in babysitting.

LVM Senior Environmental Expert Uģis Bergmanis said: “This is a unique event, as the golden eagle is one of the rarest bird species in Latvia. Under 10 pairs of this bird nest in Latvia, and it is very difficult to provide a live broadcast from the marsh, from a remote location. And it should be stressed that it is not every year that we have this event in a golden eagle nest.”

There is also a second egg in the nest – expected to hatch on Saturday or Sunday.

As Bergmanis explained, the last time a pair of golden eagles successfully nested at this site was in 2016, so this is a big event.

Golden eagles nest only in large marshes or bogs.. There are very few birds of this species in Latvia, so for a lone eagle to find a partner to build a nest is a great stroke of luck. Spilve and Grīslis live in an artificial nest installed 15 years ago in a swamp of “Latvijas Valsts meži”.
