10. A thought experiment: I wonder out of all the rapes in the UK, how many are by UK subjects with a British family tree. I suspect way more than any newspaper would have you believe. It’s almost like those newspapers *only* print the rapes by foreign nationals, because ’dog bites man’ as they say in journalism parlance, isn’t a story, but ‘man bites dog’ is. Right now, the best way for *any* newspaper to get clicks, reads, and engagement, and they’re *all* desperately struggling for clicks and circulation because they’re all failing, is to headline ‘Immigrant raped British woman/girl’, and everyone clicks on it and gets (rightly) very enraged, but the conclusions the average person can draw from this are at best without any nuance, which newspapers *never* do, in absence of all the factors, and at worst dangerous and misguided. How would you like it if, say, you lived in Brighton, and the only rapes you ever read about in national newspapers were by Brightonians, and almost all other rapes by people from other parts of the UK went unreported or minimal coverage, how long before other people who read those newspapers tarred you, as a Brightonian, with a rapist badge then?
