Moldelectrica, the state-owned electricity transmission system operator of Moldova, presented its ten-year development plan for the transmission network, which includes over 8.1 billion lei in investments.

The plan covers key projects such as upgrading over 20 substations, building new transmission lines like the 400-kilovolt (kV) Vulcănești–Chișinău and Strașeni–Bălți lines, and installing modern control and protection systems. It is based on scenarios of future electricity demand, power flow simulations and network capacity assessments, following ENTSO-E standards.

Infrastructure at the end of its lifespan

According to technical surveys, a significant portion of the existing infrastructure is at the end of its technical and economic lifespan, and its development can no longer be delayed.

“Through this plan, we aim to build a modern, robust, and interoperable transmission network capable of meeting the energy market’s demands over the next decade, said Dorin Junghietu, Minister of Energy. It is a concrete step towards strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s energy security and fully integrating into the European electricity market.”

“This plan is not only a legal obligation, but also an essential technical planning tool,” emphasised Sergiu Aparatu, Interim General Director of the State Enterprise Moldelectrica. “It reflects the current state of infrastructure, as well as the growing pressure from emerging generation capacities, particularly from renewable sources. We are working with concrete scenarios and well-defined projects to meet the needs of a dynamic, increasingly decentralised and interconnected system.”
