After Nixon, the GOP was adamant that nothing like that ever happens again. I’d argue that Iran Contra was a larger gate than Watergate, and it proved that if you just circle the wagons, there’s no effective political recourse for your opponents to even touch you.
That strategy has held pretty firm since then.
That pretty much sums it up. I know he’s a crook, you know he’s a crook, Congress knows he’s a crook, and his supporters know he’s a crook, but no-one cares, and no-one will do anything about it.
Nixon said when the president does it it’s not illegal and the SCOTUS and Trump finally made that statement true.
Watergate looks positively quaint by today’s standards. Nixon also managed to do at least one good thing when he was president.
At this point, everyone in America knows they ALL are crooks.
So what’s the point????
I’m sure Homer Comer will open investigations into all of Trump’s corruption, right? Any day now. Any day now. Right after Trump announces all of his “trade deals”. And his health care plan.
The writing was on the wall before Trump was elected president first time round.
Allegations he didn’t pay his taxes? Allegations he’d ripped people off with Trump U? Allegations he and his family had missused charitable funds? MAGA: “That proves he’s a good businessman! He’s cut-throat, and that’s what we need!”
They’re fine with enabling crooks, because that’s their power fantasy – being rich and above the law.
