Black smoke pours from Sistine Chapel’s chimney, as no new pope chosen • FRANCE 24 English

Well, it’s clear from this Thursday morning uh double vote that we didn’t have to wait that additional length of time as we did on Wednesday night. A decision was made and therefore we saw that black smoke and what this means is that now the cardinals who are sequestered inside that cyine chapel will be breaking for lunch. Uh there could be some discussions there and this process continues again this afternoon. We’ll see two rounds of voting and then we’ll see whether we’ll get that white smoke at the end of the two rounds or black smoke again. We could in fact even see earlier than that time if in that first round of those two rounds of voting this afternoon they actually make a decision. So really that waiting game continues. Uh I was earlier in the square speaking to some of the people gathered. uh there were people who are here in Rome uh for the tennis tournament that’s on and they decided to join the crowd here because they felt this too was another spectacle another event to be present for I spoke to a a woman originally from the Philippines uh who said that she was hoping for a Filipino cardinal perhaps Cardinal Taglay or Cardinal Davidid uh to be the next pope but of course she just said she felt very lucky to be here. I also met some Romans who said uh yes, they’re hopeful, but they’re also frustrated about the number of crowds and the road closures that are creating problems in terms of movement. So clearly a variety of people gathered in the square, a mood similar to Wednesday and continuing in Thursday. Uh Pope Francis and Pope Benedict were both elected on the second day of voting. So uh the tension and anticipation continues this Thursday. Could we see a pope, a new pope by the end of the day? We’ll have to see whether the Cardinals need more time, but there will be another two round of voting uh two rounds of voting this afternoon as
