Just found this lil guy chilling on the side of my house in the middle of the day in 25 degree heat. Anyone know why he might be doing this?? Have lived out in the country all my life and never seen anything like this!

  1. It’s a day walker … we’re doomed 😂 cute little fella, pretty sure it’s not supposed to be there, on the plus side it’s in the shade but pretty low down.

  2. Like a bat out of Hell.
I′ll be gone when the morning comes /s

  3. Little soul. I’d be inclined to leave him be but perhaps make sure there is an umbrella or something up to shade him from the sun.

  4. Little dude is not well. They’re quite fragile physically, and can carry disease, so don’t try to handle him in case he panics and bites you, but as someone else has shared, there is a number you can call and they will pick him up.

ETA: If they fly around your garden at night, that’s fine, that’s when they catch bugs to eat. If one of them is hanging out like that in the day, though, there’s usually something wrong.

  5. I know it’s bad I wanna pet it but I wanna pet it

  6. Wonder if there’s something going on with the UK bat population at the moment, recently had one fly into me on a walk I’ve done at night 100s of times and it’s never happened before

  7. I called the Bats Trust when I saw one flying out and feeding in the day. Apparently, they sometimes do that – especially in spring.

  8. What a chonk, make sure to look up the bats org ad that’s not normal at all

  9. UPDATE: he has a messed up wing and can’t fly, I’ve put him in a lil box and called my local bat group who are coming to pick him up. He is currently wrapped up in a tea towel sleeping it off. Thanks to everyone for the advice!

  10. My cat brought a bat in the house. She was not a very good hunter, I think she was going for a moth at the same time as the bat and got more than she bargained for, which is why she brought it home!

I put it in a sideways box on the kitchen window ledge and it was gone the next day. Or so I thought… My neighbour knocked on my door presenting me with a bat in a cigar tin (?) that she’d found on her wall (in much the same position as yours). I took it to the emergency vet. Don’t know what happened after that…

What really got me was the fact that I, a woman in her 30s, had to explain to my female neighbours on both sides (60s and 80s) that it wasn’t a baby bat. That’s how big adult bats are in the UK… They honestly thought they grew as big as fruit bats!

  11. Awww, a little pipistrelle, I think.

I have been really interested in bats lately. I’m glad you looked after this little fellow. Usually if they are out in the daytime it’s not good.

Please do get vaccinated. The risk of rabies is actually quite low in UK bats, from what I’ve heard, but, rabies is a hell of a thing so not worth the risk.

They are very small, aren’t they? I didn’t think we even had any here because my frame of reference was those (gorgeous) giant fruit bats. And these, by comparison, are so dinky!

  12. Don’t worry, it will be gone when the morning comes.

[ someone else beat me to it…grrr ]
