OXFORD United are going Dutch when it comes to ramping up plans this week for the summer transfer window.

U’s head coach Gary Rowett will be joined by members of his coaching staff and the club’s recruitment team for a trip to the Netherlands this week, with matches involving potential signings.

United signed Hidde ter Avest and Ole Romeny from Eredivisie side FC Utrecht during the most recent summer and January transfer windows respectively.

There is a full set of Eredivisie fixtures on Wednesday evening, with the U’s seemingly looking to target the Dutch market again.

Rowett said: “When I first started at Burton [Albion] as a manager, I had to do everything. Literally every single thing. So, when you’ve started at that point, then you end up where we are now, it becomes so much easier because you don’t mind doing as much work as we need to.

“Ed [Waldron, head of football operations] has built a brilliant group of people that have done some really good work so far. This is where he comes alive doing all this work in the summer.

“Quite frankly, they will line up most of the targets and add the data to the targets to make sure objectively we’re getting the right type of players.

“We will all then watch them. I think we’re going out to Holland on Wednesday to watch some games.

“We need to do some smart work, and we’ll all work together on that, but predominantly Ed and his guys will do the hard yards, which makes it so much easier for the likes of me because you can almost come in at the end and say ‘I really like that one’ or ‘not sure about that one’, and work through that way.

“It doesn’t mean you’re going to get them, but it at least means we’re trying to identify the right batch of players for Ed to then go and try and negotiate with those clubs and the agents.

“He does a lot of good work. We’ve seen that previously, and we work really well together.”

Rowett added: “Quite frankly, there’ll be a lot of clubs in this division fishing in an incredibly different pond to us, and that’s just the challenge because if you look at the division next year, there are going to be some big strong clubs financially.

“We’re sort of competing with maybe 10 other clubs for players budget-wise, and hopefully that’s still very positive for us.

“It’s always a fluid department and fluid options. We’ve got some good targets and it’s really just a case of seeing if we can get some of those targets over the line quickly, and some we might have to be a little bit more patient for.”
