  1. [Russia](https://inews.co.uk/topic/russia?srsltid=AfmBOorvb1x-1OTRfkv5Bx8kNNi2HnEPqkXy2H17uZoxEpYM2b30yp-a&ico=in-line_link) attacked [Ukraine](https://inews.co.uk/topic/ukraine?ico=in-line_link) with more than 100 [drones ](https://inews.co.uk/topic/drones?ico=in-line_link)overnight, the Ukrainian military said, after Moscow rejected UK and European calls for a 30-day ceasefire.

[Sir Keir Starmer](https://inews.co.uk/topic/keir-starmer?srsltid=AfmBOoq0iij106N6GIpgjKhRa0VoObRikLOWH_qJmQHmFbC24XqGhUIX&ico=in-line_link) met Ukrainian president [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/topic/volodymyr-zelensky?srsltid=AfmBOopilavBfgtSWDwNGuOsLyJTq_AWSQslJITpLo4eD3bF4uFELqh1&ico=in-line_link) on Sunday in Kyiv alongside France’s [Emmanuel Macron](https://inews.co.uk/topic/emmanuel-macron?srsltid=AfmBOoqruhwW8cTRDBcbeCdrijQygt8MsN6Hd0AMkzFeeprsAkKkZWhk&ico=in-line_link), Polish prime minister Donald Tusk and the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where the leaders jointly issued a stern demand that [Vladimir Putin ](https://inews.co.uk/topic/vladimir-putin?ico=in-line_link)agree to pause the fighting.

Zelensky said he would accept the ceasefire, which he said would smooth the ground ahead of a [meeting in Turkey on Thursday](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/ukraine-russia-talks-zelensky-confirms-meeting-putin-3688112?ico=in-line_link) proposed by Putin.

“There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will wait for Putin on Thursday in Turkey,” Zelensky said.

In later remarks he said: “A complete and unconditional ceasefire – long term, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy – could bring peace much closer.”

Speaking at a press conference marking the end of [Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations on Sunday](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/moscow-victory-parade-pictures-how-far-russia-fallen-3681308?ico=in-line_link), Putin said Russia would engage in talks “without any preconditions”, appearing to suggest that he was not interested in a ceasefire.

In the hours that followed, Russia attacked Ukraine with 108 Shahed and decoy drones overnight from Sunday into Monday across Odesa, Mykolaiv, Donetsk, and Zhytomyr, [Ukrainian officials said](https://t.me/kpszsu/34249).

They added that 55 drones were shot down by Ukrainian troops.

Eight more warnings for Russian strikes – from drones, bombs, and missiles – were issued on Monday morning across Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv and Kharkiv.

The ceasefire demand lost much of its potency after [Donald Trump ](https://inews.co.uk/topic/donald-trump?ico=in-line_link)made clear he did not consider it a prerequisite for the broader peace talks.

  2. Not exactly surprising.

    1. It’s clear Putin doesn’t currently want to end this war. I mean, I’m sure that if he got his true maximalist demands he would do it, but that would really just be a surrender from Ukraine forced by Trump and the United States. The only reason why Putin is going along with all of this is in order to string the United States along as much as possible while he tries to make gains on the ground. Or, in a rare scenario, if he can actually get his maximalist demands. Trump completely causing the U.S. to pull back is also a good outcome for him.
    2. Putin has never acknowledged the EU as a legitimate, geopolitical entity. The EU has no army to send after him. And, more importantly, Putin doesn’t WANT the EU to have any legitimacy. A united Europe is something Putin wants to avoid at all costs. That’s why he constantly funds efforts to undermine the whole project.
    3. Putin’s dream has always been for the two, in his mind, great powers (Russia and the United States) to negotiate over everyone else’s heads. Over Ukraine’s heads and over European countries’ heads. Because he has always believed in sphere of influence, great power politics where the strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must. And no doubt believes that such a negotiation which doesn’t take into account Ukrainian or European wishes is significantly beneficial to him. And Trump, in his infinite stupidity, has served him this up on a platter.

  3. It’s almost like Putin’s strategic war aims aren’t changing, even with this weird gentleman’s agreement Trump thinks is going to work out for him.

  4. I thought Trump said yesterday Putin won’t do the cease fire because he will do a direct sit down with Zelensky on Thursday. Pretty sure Putin also said he won’t do a ceasefire before that sit down.

  5. I don’t understand his goal. He will keep the land and the people are already being russified. Bit while he may capture some more there won’t be a out and out annexation of Ukraine. Is he hoping it will or what do you think his plan is?

  6. The Russian military probably doesn’t listen to him anymore

  7. It seems like Europe has to keep being reminded that they are not a world power anymore.

  8. Does that also include US demand as well ? Just yesterday Trump called for ceasefire !

But everyone will soon find out that you can’t order a mafia mob boss around. The only language he understands is total defeat and death.
