2. The machinery required to produce artillery barrels is both complex and expensive. Russia has just two Austrian-built rotary forges that together can churn out 200 barrels per year. This doesn’t even begin to cover their titanic losses, so they have to cannibalize their Soviet stockpile. Bottomless as it may seem, that stockpile is finite, and after 3+ years of war all the best stuff has been pulled out of storage already. The more they scrounge, the worse their barrels become, which means they wear out faster, which means more scrounging, until all they have left are rust-covered tubes.
