In the first quarter of 2025, 828 electric vehicles were registered in the Republic of Moldova, almost three times more than in the same period last year. In the same period, 6,396 hybrid vehicles were registered, an increase of 281%, IPN reports.
According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy, from 2018 to March 2025, more than 64,000 electric and hybrid vehicles were registered. 6,612 are fully electric, the others are hybrids, including plug-in type.
This evolution reflects the growing interest of Moldovans in less polluting means of transport. According to the authorities, more and more drivers are turning to electric cars, which do not emit greenhouse gases, or to hybrid cars, which combine the efficiency of the electric motor with the flexibility of a conventional motor.
The rapid growth was also accompanied by the development of infrastructure. More than 300 charging points for electric vehicles are available in the Republic of Moldova. They are located in urban areas, on the main road arteries and near border crossing points.
Another factor that encourages this transition is the surplus of green energy generated on days with intense wind and sun. For example, in mid-April this year, energy from renewable sources reached a record level of 36% of the total production, according to the Ministry of Energy. Specialists believe that electric vehicles can help use this surplus by charging batteries at peak production times.
Even if the share of electric and hybrid vehicles in the total number of cars registered in the Republic of Moldova remains low, around 4%, the trend is clearly upward. In recent years, the authorities emphasized the importance of ensuring sustainable mobility and reducing fossil fuel consumption, while promoting the benefits of low-emission transportation.
From June 2024, vehicles with environmentally friendly powertrains in the Republic of Moldova have started to receive green license plates. The measure is part of the Government’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is aimed at better identifying non-polluting vehicles in traffic and encouraging sustainable mobility.

The rapid evolution of the green car market in the Republic of Moldova confirms not only the change in consumer preferences, but also a gradual adaptation to European standards in terms of mobility and environmental protection. Specialists say that electric vehicles offer a number of advantages. They run on electricity stored in batteries, which allows them to run without polluting emissions. Refueling costs are lower compared to conventional fuels, and maintenance is simpler, thanks to the fewer moving parts. In addition, electric cars are quieter.
